Alliance Paper & Food Service was founded on March 1,1954 by Ted Karp. Ted was a local paper merchant who grew up in the paper industry and decided to jump at the opportunity to become an independent businessman. Alliance Paper Company opened in a three-story building at 941 West Randolph Street in the Randolph Market District. The District was made up of many wholesale merchants in food related businesses. It was a thriving business environment where many wholesale shoppers hand-picked much of their stock, going from merchant to merchant purchasing their inventory and then taking it back to their businesses.
Over the years Ted and his two sons, Gene and Bob, established the company as a reliable source of packaging related products that supplied neighboring businesses, restaurants, meat markets and independent deli’s throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1962 they moved the Company to 911-915 West Randolph Street. Gene and Bob worked hard under their father’s direction. By maintaining an impeccable reputation for quality and service the business grew considerably.
In 1986 it was time for Ted to retire. His sons had decided to go in different directions, so Ted put up the FOR SALE sign. On May 5, 1986 a group of investors, Flat Enterprises Inc. led by Brian Flynn, acquired the company. For two years Ted stayed on with the company to help in the transition. Brian and his team set out to achieve the goal of living up to Ted’s reputation of being a valued supplier by continuing the tradition of offering quality products and reliable service. This goal remains the corner stone of Alliance’s success and is reflected in our Mission Statement, “Committed to Serving Our Customers with Integrity and Reliability.”
In March of 1988 the owners of Alliance Paper Co. acquired Damore Wholesale Grocers located 1 block west at 941 West Randolph Street. For the first three years the two companies operated independently. In 1991 the two companies were merged to form Alliance Paper and Food Service. In 2002 the company expanded into its new office and main warehouse in Franklin Park, Illinois while continuing to operate the original Cash and Carry facility at 913 West Randolph Street in Chicago.
